Vocational integration of Travelling People in Europe

Socrates-Grundtvig

The Project

The way of life of “Travelling people” is often an obstacle to their vocational and social integration.

Educational and vocational training systems are not adapted to the travellers’ irregular schooling (high levels of absenteeism, postponed starts and early finishes to the school year due to seasonal work), and do not allow a different teaching approach for the members of these communities.

The final objective of the project would be to find new means to increase

  • the proportion of youngsters from traveller communities who receive training beyond the minimum school leaving-age (notably in terms of professional training)
  • the level of participation in further professional training initiatives for adults (particulary for young adults of 16 - 25 having received some basic schooling)

The specific objectives and activities of the project are :

  • To publish a guidebook (available on line and printable) of “good practices” wich have improved, in the partners’ countries, the vocational training and professional integration of Travelling people

  • To achieve and to publish a survey about Travelling peoples’ specific needs regarding the organisation of educational and training system

  • To determine what innovatory pedagogical methods and tools should be developed to improve the level of vocational training, professional qualification and integration of the target group3.
