Examples of good practices

The project partners have selected in their different countries examples of good practices wich have improved the vocational training and professional integration of Travelling people.

  • The secondary school of Maringues (a little town in the center of France) is involved since 2004 in an original action to encourage Travelling People's children to pursue their studies beyond their 16th birthdays
  • The Adults Training Centre of Peñafiel, near Valladolid, in Spain, organizes a special training for young Gypsy women who left school at an early age and who are in charge of their families
  • The Sauletekio secondary school of Vilnius, in Lithuania, has opened a special class for Roma children in a Russian speaking school to improve their skills in Lithuanian language and to increase their motivation for learning
  • The University of Ioannina, in Greece, manages a special training for teachers about communication, culture and personality Roma students
  • In Ostrava (Czech republic) the NGO S.T.O.P helps socially disadvantaged pupils with learning problems
  • The middle schools of Aurillac and Saint-Flour, in the Auvergne region (France), are involved in a common pedagogical sheme to increase the skills and knowledges of the Travelling People's children in the fileds of reading, writing and arithmetic
The local context :
  • The Social Centre "El Mirador" of Peñafiel, in Spain, leads a lot of activities to enhance the living conditions of the Gypsy community by promoting their access to the welfare system on equal terms with other population groups
  • A project to test mechanismes of integration of Roma people in the labour market of Vilnius and other Lithuanian regions
  • The Hellenic Agency for Local Development manages a training whose aim is to give trainees the qualifications needed to act as Links – Mediators between their communities and non-Roma people, and to work in organisations for the information and counselling of Roma citizens.
  • The association Living Together of Ostrava (Czech republic) involves Romany mothers in a program for preparing their children to start school and to be successful in the first year.
  • The GRETA (Group of Establishments of the National Education) of Aurillac (France) achieves a training for Travelling People to improve their basic knowledges (reading, writing, arihmetic), to increase their autonomy and to help them to prepare the highway examination.
The local context :
  • The Labour Exchange of Vilnius, Lithuania, has created a work club to help unqualified people to find a job.
  • SAOUROU is an integrated intervention at regional level, aimed at the social and economic inclusion of the gypsies living in various areas of the region of Western Greece
  • The GRETA of Aurillac (France) achieves also a training for the young Travellers to help them to prepare the driving licence examination.
The local context :
  • The Adults Training Centre of Peñafiel, Spain, prepares illiterate adults for special oral tests created to help them to obtain the driving licence. The goal is to facilitate their social integration and acces to the labour market
  • The middle school "Victor Hugo" of Volvic (France) prioritizes the communication between "Travelling pupils" and "non-Travelling pupils".
  • The "Antonio Allue Morer" infant and primary school of Valladolid, in Spain, fights against absenteeism. The school has received a Good Educational Practice award from the Education and Science Ministry for this action
  • At Aurillac (France), the Travelling Children receive a special help for their homework, at their living place.
The local context :
  • ACCEDER is a Spanish multiregional operational programme for the fight against discrimination aimed at the Roma/Gypsy population.

Proposals about methods and tools which could improve the vocational training and integration of Travelling People

The third year of the project has been devoted to study (through interviews and discussions with relevant stakeholders) the specific situation and needs of "Tavelling Women". And the project partners have thought about possible innovative methods and tools liable to improve their vocational training and professional integration.
